Individual Family Homes

Light of Mine Ranch is great opportunity to support foster families in a centralized environment. Potential foster parents are often hesitant or never even get started because they do not have the resources to support multiple children. Some of the resources and problems include:

  • Not having the right kind of vehicles

  • Not having enough bedrooms

  • Not knowing how to access WIC and childcare resources

  • Not having enough time to devote to appointments and "catch up"

  • Not budgeting the foster care stipend properly

  • Thinking they have to bear the burdens alone

  • Not being able to afford activities, music lessons, sports, hobbies, extracurriculars, etc.

  • Not feeling prepared to parent special cases

  • Not feeling educated enough about Native American culture

  • Feeling overwhelmed by large sibling groups

The SD Department of Social Services' main focus is safety and security. We know that foster children need that and so much more.
